I was appalled by Patrick Mahomes’ tantrum in the loss against the Bills. He showed a lack of respect for the officials and the game. He acted like a spoiled brat who couldn’t handle not getting his way. He has been pampered and protected by the league for too long. His apology was insincere and insufficient. He should face some consequences for his unacceptable behavior. He is not worthy of being a league MVP. He needs to grow up and learn some humility.
Mahomes lost his cool after a wild play that would have given the Chiefs the lead was nullified by an offsides penalty on Kadarius Toney. He screamed at the refs, slammed his helmet, and had to be restrained by his teammates. He also complained to Bills quarterback Josh Allen after the game, as if Allen had anything to do with the call. Mahomes was clearly frustrated by his own poor performance, as he threw two interceptions and failed to lead his team to a comeback victory.
Mahomes claimed that he was upset because the refs did not warn him that Toney was lined up offsides, as they usually do. He said that he had never seen offensive offsides called in his seven years of playing in the NFL. He implied that the refs robbed him and his team of a chance to win the game. He said that the fans deserved to see the players decide the game on the field, not the refs with their flags.
Mahomes’ arguments are weak and self-serving. He is trying to shift the blame from himself and his team to the refs. He is ignoring the fact that Toney was clearly offsides, and that the refs made the correct call. He is also forgetting that the Chiefs had plenty of opportunities to win the game, but they squandered them with turnovers, penalties, and poor execution. He is acting as if he is entitled to win every game, and that any obstacle or adversity is unfair and unjust. He is showing a lack of sportsmanship and grace in defeat.
Mahomes needs to realize that he is not above the rules, and that he has to accept the consequences of his actions. He also needs to realize that he is not invincible, and that he has to work hard to overcome his challenges. He needs to apologize sincerely to the refs, his teammates, his coaches, and his fans. He needs to take responsibility for his mistakes, and learn from them. He needs to show some respect for his opponents, and congratulate them on their win. He needs to act like a true leader, and a true champion.
