The current state of the WV high school football playoffs is causing headaches across athletic departments throughout West Virginia. With the onset of winter sports happening at high schools around the state, many of those programs will feel the secondary effects of the lingering football season.
The start of the regular season high school basketball schedule tips-off in less than a month. Flex days have been underway, parent/player meetings are happening, and tryouts are beginning. It doesn't end there, as wrestlers are to report to the mats this coming Monday for the first day of wrestling practice.
In southern WV alone, powerhouse wrestling programs Independence and Woodrow Wilson share some of the same athletes with their school's football teams. Likewise, many basketball programs across the area share those same players on teams who are traditional state contenders. For reference, the following football programs are expected to make the 2024 football playoffs and also competed in last winter's basketball tournament: Shady Spring, Woodrow Wilson, Bluefield, and James Monroe.
While it has been a quiet day in both Charleston and Parkersburg, we anxiously await any news from the WVSSAC and the WV Supreme Court.
