The 49ers have traded Trey Lance to the Dallas Cowboys for a 2024 fourth-round pick just two years after San Francisco traded three first-round picks to move up from the 12th overall pick to the third selection for him in 2021.
Two days ago, Head Coach Kyle Shanahan announced Sam Darnold as QB2 going into the season a few weeks after committing to Brock Purdy as the starter. Shanahan stated that Sam Darnold started to “seperate himself 10 days ago". Darnold threw 1-7 in camp..
Trey Lance appeared in 8 games across his 49ers tenure which is the fewest games a top 5 pick has every played with the team they debuted with since the start of the uncommon draft era in 1967, per Field Yates. Lance has only had 591 throws in real game scenarios in his entire life.
99 Attempts in High School
318 Attempts in College
72 attempts in Pre Season
And 102 Attempts in the Regular Season
For Comparison, last year Geno Smith threw the ball 607 times in one season, Per @WTFstats. Is that a big enough sample size to pull the trigger on the 3rd overall pick? Of course not but they did.
The real wildcard here is the Dallas Cowboys. I instantly get taken back to the Carson Wentz and the Eagles drafting Jalen Hurts situation.
Dallas who is primed for a post season run has just invited a QB controversy to their fan base. After Trevon Diggs called Dak a " B***h", is there looks from up top for a potential QB change? This will be fun in the upcoming weeks.
