MONTCALM, WVÂ â The Montcalm Generals delivered a commanding performance last night, securing a decisive victory over the Bland County Bears with a final score of 55-14Â in a non-conference football matchup.Â
Playing at home, the Generals' offense was firing on all cylinders, putting up an impressive 55 points and overwhelming the visiting Bears' defense. The win moves Montcalm's season record to 4-5Â as they enter the final week of the regular season.Â
Montcalm's standout playmakers were evident throughout the contest. Senior quarterback Landin Clower was effective through the air, wide receiver Korbin Nunn was a major target, and running back Aiden Gauger anchored the ground game.
For Bland County, the evening was a tough outing. Despite coming off a recent close win, the Bears struggled to contain Montcalm's explosive attack, and the loss drops their season record to 2-8.
The Playoff Picture: Generals Need Help
While the 55-14 victory was impressive, the Montcalm Generals (Class A) face a steep challenge in securing a spot in the WVSSAC Class A Football Playoffs (which take the top 16 teams).
The team's current record of 4-5 puts them on the outside of the playoff bracket. To earn enough points to qualify for the postseason, the Generals not only must defeat Tygarts Valley in their final game this Friday, but they critically rely on the help of other Class A teams
.
Under the WVSSAC system, a team's total rating points are heavily influenced by the bonus points earned from the wins of the opponents they have defeated. Therefore, Montcalm's path to the playoffs hinges on the continued success of the teams they beat earlier in the season. A loss by a high-rated team they defeated could mathematically eliminate the Generals.
Looking Ahead:
The Generals will look to do their part in the final push this Friday, November 7, when they travel to face the Tygarts Valley Bulldogs (2-7)Â at 7:00 p.m. Montcalm must secure this win and then watch the scoreboard for favorable results from around the state.
