The Pittsburgh Steelers opened their 2025 Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this past week, with rookies and veterans coming together on the practice field for the first time this offseason. From promising rookie showings to steady veteran leadership, the first week gave fans and coaches a glimpse of what’s to come.
🔥Rookies Turning Heads🔥
Kaleb Johnson (RB)
The Steelers’ third-round pick out of Iowa is already making noise in the backfield. Johnson’s smooth transition to the NFL has been helped by his experience in a similar offensive scheme at Iowa. He’s shown burst, patience, and solid instincts — enough to draw praise from coaches early on.
Will Howard (QB)
Pittsburgh’s sixth-round selection at quarterback has been calm and collected during his first pro reps. While there’s still a learning curve ahead, Howard has flashed maturity and leadership in the huddle, giving coaches a reason to keep an eye on his development.
Derrick Harmon (DT)
The team’s first-round pick is fitting in well with Pittsburgh’s veteran defensive front. Harmon has shown a willingness to learn and hasn’t backed down from physical drills. His early energy and physical presence are exactly what the Steelers hoped to see from the big man out of Michigan State.
Jack Sawyer (LB)
Fourth-rounder Jack Sawyer has displayed his signature intensity and playmaking upside. He’s likely not projected as an every-down contributor right away, but the tools are there — and the Steelers are already thinking about how to use him situationally.
👴Veteran Guidance Key to Success👴
The early OTA sessions have featured strong attendance from veteran players, and their presence is making a difference. From locker room leadership to on-field communication, veterans are helping set a tone of accountability and work ethic. Their mentorship is especially important with so many young players vying for roles.
💪 Quarterback Watch 💪
Mason Rudolph, back with the team after re-signing in March, is taking the lead in quarterback reps for now. Despite outside speculation about the position — including rumors involving Aaron Rodgers — Rudolph is focused on leading by example and preparing for what could be a pivotal year in his career.
👀What’s Next👀
The Steelers will continue OTAs through early June before shifting into mandatory minicamp from June 10–12. If Week 1 is any indication, the Steelers’ 2025 rookie class could play a major role in reshaping the roster — and possibly the team’s identity — heading into the new season.
