Bold Predictions: Washington Commanders

By Ryan Monniniger

I’ve been a Washington fan for 20 years now, and this 20-year stretch has arguably been the worst in franchise history. They made the playoffs one year and then only won 3 games the following season. So, for the younger fans, the new generation of Washington fans, expectations are always low. BUT exciting things have taken place in Washington this offseason and Preseason. A new name, A NEW OWNER, and a new Quarterback. Re-signed some key players such as DT Daron Payne to a 4-year extension and had a solid draft class highlighted by 16th overall pick from Mississippi St. CB Emmanuel Forbes and 2nd round pick DB Jartavius Martan from Illinois. With all the excitement in the air, it feels like a turning point for the culture in Washington. Here are my bold predictions for the 2023 season.

  1. Sam Howell is a Gun Slinger

Through two preseason games Sam Howell is 28/37 for 265 yards and 3 TDs with a passer rating of 121.25. Howell, a 5th round draft pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, has been named the starter. With weapons like WRs Terry McLaurin. Jahan Dotson, Curtis Samual, RBs Antonio Gibson and Brian Robinson Jr., the Commanders offense should allow Howell to have a big season. I predict Howell will throw for 3500 yards 25+ TDs with 10+ INTs.

  1. Washington will finish with a top 10 Defense.

What’s a young QB’s best friend in the NFL? A strong run game, and a great defense. Returning most starter from last season's top ten defense, highlighted by Montez Sweat, Chase Young, Jonathan Allen, and Kamren Curl. The Washington Commanders and Sam Howell are going to lean on that defense to get them through tough, close games in the beginning of the season. They addressed some secondary issues via the NFL Draft by drafting CB Emmanual Forbes with the 16th overall pick and safety Jartavius Martin in the second round and signed LB Cody Barton. With all those additions and knowing they allowed the fourth fewest passing yards per game last year; I predict the Washington Commanders defense with finish in the top 5 best NFL defenses.

I predict a solid 9-8 finish, with a surprise win in week 4 over the reigning NFC Champions Eagles. Sam Howell to take a step towards becoming an elite NFL Quarterback, a top 10 defensive finish and making it to NFC Wild Card Weekend.
